Celebrating Women Shaping the Construction and Design Industry
Women Build It is a year-round community built for women in the building, design, and construction industries right here in Indianapolis. It’s a network built around connection, confidence, and career growth — through Momentum Series gatherings, workshops, networking, the WBI Conference, and honest conversations with women who truly get it.
The community culminates each year in the Women Build It Conference, bringing together women at every stage of their careers for a full day of keynote speakers, breakout sessions, insights, and the kind of mentorship that sticks with you long after the day ends.
At the heart of it all is a recognition that women in this field have earned something worth celebrating.
The Woman of the Year Award
Launched in 2024, the Woman of the Year Award was created to shine a light on the women who aren’t just in this industry — they’re shaping it. It’s a community-driven recognition, meaning anyone can nominate someone they believe deserves to be seen.
The award celebrates women who embody at least one of the following:
- Influential in the industry — Her work, her decisions, or her presence have made a meaningful mark on the building, design, or construction field.
- A standout mentor — She invests her time, knowledge, and encouragement in the women coming up behind her.
- Driving positive change — She’s actively working to make this industry better — more equitable, more innovative, more inclusive.
- A strong voice for women in the field — She speaks up, speaks out, and makes sure women’s perspectives are heard and respected.
You don’t have to know her entire résumé to nominate her. You just have to know her impact.
Why This Award Matters
The numbers tell part of the story: women make up only 14% of the construction industry workforce. The road into — and through — this industry has never been easy for women, and the women who’ve carved out space here have often done so without much fanfare.
The Woman of the Year Award exists to change that. It says that influence, mentorship, advocacy, and courage deserve to be recognized publicly and celebrated loudly.
When we name these women, we give other women permission to imagine themselves in those same roles. We show younger generations what’s possible. We build a culture where women move to the forefront as leaders of our industry.
Who Comes to Mind?
Think about the women in your professional life. Who has made a difference in your career, in your company, or in the broader community?
Maybe it’s a colleague who took you under her wing when you were just starting out. Maybe it’s a business owner who has quietly changed the culture of her firm. Maybe it’s someone who’s been advocating loudly for women on job sites, in boardrooms, or in the trade associations that shape industry standards. Maybe it’s someone you’ve watched lead a team through challenges with grace and grit.
Whoever she is, she deserves to be nominated.
How to Get Involved
Nominating someone is one of the most meaningful things you can do to support women in our industry. Visit womenbuildindy.com to learn more about the award, the upcoming 2026 Women Build It Conference, and the Momentum Series events happening throughout the year.
And if you want to be part of this community in a bigger way — as an attendee or a sponsor — there’s room for you here too.
